“Are you ordering?” “Fudgy banana milkshake. I am flying, man!”
Ingredients:
For the ice cream:
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
1 14-oz can sweetened condensed milk
¼ tsp salt
2 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced
½ cup milk chocolate chips
1 tsp coconut oil
For the hot fudge sauce:
2 tbsp salted butter
⅓ cup milk chocolate chips
½ cup heavy cream
⅓ cup granulated sugar
3 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
For the whipped cream:
½ cup heavy cream
⅛ cup powdered sugar
½ tsp vanilla
For the milkshake:
1 half ripe banana
2 scoops of banana ice cream
½ cup milk
1 tbsp hot fudge sauce
Directions:
For the ice cream:
Combine heavy cream, whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, and salt in a medium mixing bowl.
Add the banana to a food processor and blend until smooth. Add to the ice cream mixture and stir to combine.
If you have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into the drum and churn for 20 minutes.
If you don’t have an ice cream maker, churn by hand using an electric mixer or whisk.
While the ice cream is churning, add the chocolate chips and coconut oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second increments until the chocolate has fully melted.
If you have an ice cream maker, slowly drizzle the melted chocolate into the ice cream during the last 2 minutes of churning.
If you don’t have an ice cream maker, drizzle the melted chocolate once the ice cream has frozen halfway.
Transfer the ice cream to a loaf tin and allow to firm up.
For the hot fudge sauce:
Place a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the butter and chocolate chips and allow to completely melt.
Whisk in the heavy cream then the sugar until fully combined. Then whisk in the cocoa powder and vanilla.
Stir continuously for 5-10 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
Remove from heat and allow to cool.
For the whipped cream:
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Using an electric mixer with the whisk attachment, whisk until soft peaks form.
For the milkshake
To a blender, add half of a ripe banana, 2 scoops of the banana ice cream, half a cup of whole milk, and 1 tablespoon of the hot fudge sauce. Blend until smooth.
Pour into a tall glass then serve with whipped cream, more hot fudge sauce, and the other half of the ripe banana.
Let me just say, Kirk knows how to order. In Winter in A Year in the Life, Kirk goes into Luke’s diner and orders one of these bad boys; I think he definitely made the right call. Now, you certainly don’t have to make your own ice cream, whipped cream, and hot fudge sauce if you don’t want to, but it was fun to make all of these milkshake ingredients from scratch!
Happy cooking from the Hollow!
